Viacom18 Media Pvt. Ltd. is one of India’s fastest-growing entertainment networks and a house of iconic brands that offers multi-platform, multi-generational, and multicultural brand experiences.

Business Challenge

Viacom18’s vision to provide engaging and entertaining experiences to their customers led them on a digital transformation journey. This journey focused on providing highly personalized content recommendations. The crucial aspect of this approach required a data infrastructure that can process terabytes of daily viewer data and build powerful analytics on top of it.

They were tasked with ingesting and processing over 45,000 hours of daily content on VOOT (Viacom18’s on-demand video subscription platform) which easily generated 700GB to 1TB data per day.

Viacom18’s original framework wasn’t optimized to deliver as per defined SLAs, limiting their ability to analyze data efficiently. The other challenge was the infrastructure complexity. Provisioning clusters for ETL required significant resources resulting in high operational costs.

To achieve efficient operations, Viacom18 also needed to simplify their financial tools and complex ERP processes which were halting employee productivity.

Our Solution

To improve processing power and analytics capabilities, Celebal Technologies integrated Azure Databricks into Viacom18’s Azure ecosystem. This provided them with a Unified Data Analytics Platform with modern data warehousing capabilities and accelerated data processing at scale.

The ability to cache data within Managed Delta Lake on Databricks resulted in acceleration of queries. The cluster management feature provided auto-scaling capabilities that simplified infrastructure management and optimized operational costs.

The notebooks feature in Databricks gave the analytics team at Viacom18, a platform for effortless collaboration. With the notebooks, they could easily communicate on everything from model training to ad hoc analysis, dashboarding and reporting using PowerBI.

The deployment of Chatbot on Microsoft Teams gave Viacom18 quick and seamless access to their SAP Purchase requisition (PR) users. The intuitive interface re-engineered their finance process. This helped them monitor procurement cycles, get approvals and control spend analysis without much hassle improving overall employee productivity.
