What is Azure Purview?
Azure Purview is a data governance and management platform that provides a holistic map of your organization’s entire data landscape.
Azure Purview can find and catalog all of your data, no matter where it resides, be it on-premise SQL servers or even third-party cloud services like AWS S3.
It classifies and labels the data according to the Microsoft Information Protection sensitivity labels.
Azure Purview provides users with a simple web-based search engine to look for data using business terms and track the source of the data with interactive visualization.
Azure Purview shows an end-to-end data lineage view that enables enterprises to track data distribution across sources, understand the movement of data, and flag sensitive information.
How does Azure Purview work?
Azure Purview will automatically find your organization’s data on-premises or in the cloud and evaluate its characteristics and sensitivity as it scans it.
The data scanning works in a serverless fashion so that you only pay for what you use.
All the metadata found during scanning is indexed and published to the Data Map. The data map is an intelligent graph describing all the data across your data estate.
Once the data map is set up, anyone in your organization can go through the data catalog and easily search and browse the data, depending on their access rights.
Since the data map is exposed to Apache Atlas APIs, the metadata can be programmatically pushed into the lineage from any data system. Purview is also fully integrated with Azure Monitor, so you can create alerts and additional views to monitor the health of the service and scans.
